French composer Achille-Claude Debussy, also known as Claude-Achille Debussy or Claude Debussy was born August 22, 1862, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Seine-et-Oise. Debussy was one of the most prominent figures in Impressionist music and among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Debussy’s music was noted for its frequent use of non-traditional scales and chromaticism. The Symbolism movement, popular in France at the time, inspired his composing and his cultural participation.

He began piano lessons at the age of 7 and at 10 he entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he was a student for 11 years. He was an extraordinary pianist and could have had a professional career as such. He performed much of the literature of Beethoven, Schumann, Weber, and Chopin.

During the summers of 1880, 1881, and 1882, Debussy traveled with Tchaikovsky’s patroness, Nadezhda von Meck. In 1880, she sent Debussy’s Danse bohémienne to Tchaikovsky. “It is a very pretty piece, but it is much too short,” he wrote. “Not a single idea is expressed fully, the form is terribly shriveled, and it lacks unity,” said Tchaikovsky. The manuscript remained in the von Meck family and was eventually sold to B. Schott’s Sohne in Mainz and published in 1932.

Debussy won the Prix de Rome for composition with his piece L’enfant prodigue. His award was a scholarship to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in the Villa Medici where he completed a four-year residence beginning in 1885. He was unhappy at the academy and often was unable to compose. One collection of art songs on IPA Source from this time period is Ariettes oubliées:

Debussy was inspired by and admired Franz Liszt’s keyboard skill. Debussy’s work was also influenced heavily by Jules Massenet. In the late 1880’s Debussy was exposed to Richard Wagner’s work, which had a lasting impact on his own compositions. As Debussy’s musical language evolved, his work was much more reflective of the Symbolist Movement of the time. By the time his opera Pelléas et Mélisande premiered in 1902, after ten years of work, it was very different from any Wagnerian opera. It was to be his only completed opera.

Debussy had a number of affairs, including one with Emma Bardac while he was married to Rosalie Texier. The situation was so controversial and they experienced so much rancor that Debussy and Bardac fled France for England. Bardac and Debussy had one daughter, Claude-Emma.

Partly due to his failing health, Debussy left several operatic projects unfinished, including two based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe: The Devil in the Belfry and The Fall of the House of Usher. He was also considering an opera based on Shakespeare’s As You Like It.

Debussy was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1903. Debussy died of cancer on March 25, 1918.

Clara Schumann (née Clara Josephine Wieck; 13 September 1819 – 20 May 1896) was a German pianist and composer, and one of the most distinguished figures of the Romantic Era.

During her time, great female musicians were rare. Womens’ “careers” were defined as and expected to be wives and mothers, not musicians, composers, and performers. Over the course of Clara’s 61-year career, she changed the format and repertoire of the piano recital and the tastes of the listening public, while at the same time caring for her husband, children, grandchildren, organizing many of her concert tours, teaching and composing.

Clara’s parents divorced in 1824 and at age 5, her mother remarried and Clara remained with her father, Friederich Wieck. Clara began studying piano at a very early age. She was a child prodigy whose training was micromanaged by her father. Her practice at the time was based on the teaching methods that Wieck developed.

At the age of eight, Clara met Robert Schumann, who was 9 years older than her. They were both performing piano at a musical event in a prominent physician’s home. Schumann later rented a room in Friedrich Wieck’s home so that he could take lessons from Wieck.

Franz Grillparzer, Austria’s leading dramatic poet, wrote a poem entitled “Clara Wieck and Beethoven” after hearing Wieck perform the Appassionata sonata during one of these recitals.

The appearance of this artist can be regarded as epoch-making…. In her creative hands, the most ordinary passage, the most routine motive acquires a significant meaning, a colour, which only those with the most consummate artistry can give.”

Over time, Robert Schumann and Clara became friends and fell in love. Ultimately, Schumann asked Friederich Wieck for permission to marry Clara. At the time, German law required the permission of the bride’s father in order to marry. Wieck felt that since Clara was such a successful and well-known prodigy and Robert Schumann still an unknown that he was “beneath” Clara. Schumann and Clara fought her father, ultimately going to the court system to gain permission to marry. Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck were married on September 12, 1840, one day before Clara turned 21. Four years later, Schumann had a serious breakdown – the first in what was a long-term fight with mental health issues.

Clara was key in changing the kinds of programs expected of concert pianists. Initially, she performed pieces that showcased the artist’s technique, including, as was customary, at least one of her works in each program. As her independence as an artist grew, her repertoire mainly contained music by leading composers.

Clara and Robert had eight children together. As her husband’s mental health state deteriorated, she increasingly became the main breadwinner of her family, and also largely ran her household and finances, as well as most of the organizing of her own concert tours. Four of her eight children and her husband Robert proceeded her in death with Robert and one of their sons ending their lives in insane asylums. When her daughter Julie died, she raised Julie’s two young children.

After Robert’s death in 1856, when she was 37 years old, Clara resumed her concert tours and focused on publishing and promoting her late husband’s works.  Clara and Franz Liszt were the only notable figures playing Robert’s work until after Clara’s death. Clara’s composing was all but stopped after her husband’s death. Her compositions remained relatively unknown until interest in her creative output developed in the 1870s.

Clara’s influence teaching inspired students to carry her teaching elsewhere throughout Europe. Her student Carl Friedberg carried the tradition to the Juilliard School the USA.

Clara was the first to publicly perform any work by Johannes Brahms. She later premiered some other Brahms works, notably the Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel.

Clara was named a Königliche und Kaiserliche Kammervirtuosin (“Royal and Imperial Chamber Virtuoso”), Austria’s highest musical honor. She was featured on the 100 Deutsche Marks banknote from January 2, 1989 until the adoption of the Euro on January 1, 2002.

Franz Joseph Haydn’s English Songs: The Canzonettas

Haydn’s English songs, The Canzonettas, are an important collection of Franz Joseph Haydn’s work and a true turning point in the development of the Art Song.  IPA Source offers the IPA text for all 12 of Haydn’s English Canzonettas.

Upon the death of his court benefactor, Prince Nikolaus, in 1790, Haydn was sent in to retirement by the prince’s unmusical successor. Still at the height of his fame and musical abilities, Haydn chose rather to accept an invitation by the German composer and impresario, Johann Peter Salomon to present his new symphonies with a orchestra before an already adoring public in London. Thus, Josef Haydn, the longtime court composer, began his new life as an independent musician.

Haydn Meets Poet, Anne Hunter

The journeys (1791–1792 and 1794–1795) were a great success, garnishing Haydn both fame and fortune. For the development of the Art Song, his time in London had special significance where he made the acquaintance of the vastly improved pianoforte Broadwood and the poet, Anne Hunter, wife of the renowned surgeon and anatomist Dr. John Hunter.

The English pianoforte was truly a revelation for Haydn whose previous keyboard works were written for the Viennese Stein pianoforte with a much lighter touch and tone more akin to the clavichord and harpsichord than the modern piano. The English instrument possessed a stronger, more robust tone capable of a greater range of dynamics and sustaining power. Anne Hunter was already a successful and influential lyric poet, known for her social literary parties, when Haydn arrived.

A True Turning Point In The Development Of The Art Song

The result of this fortunate professional collaboration with Mrs. Hunter and the new possibilities presented by the more powerful English pianoforte was a true turning point in the development of the Art Song. Whereas Beethoven is credited with the development of the first song cycle, it was Haydn with the English canzonettas who gave us the first marriage of keyboard, voice and poetry which was to become the hallmark of the 19th century Art song.

‘It seems clear that Haydn’s intention was to compose technically easy songs which could be sung at sight by any educated music-lover and played on the piano a prima vista by the average lady of musical inclination … Haydn’s earlier Lieder had not been entirely successful, for the texts were generally second-rate – in accordance with the prevailing bad literary taste in Vienna at the time – and some of the criticisms in German literary and musical journals had been distinctly unfavourable. The English texts by Mrs Hunter, although in the pastoral-cum-sentimental English tradition, are far better than Haydn’s previous German texts. Musically, too, the English Canzonettas are worlds away from the kleinbürgerliche literary trash which Haydn, who like Leonardo used to call himself “un uomo senza lettere”, indiscriminately set to music’ (H. C. Robbins Landon, Haydn: Chronicle and Works. [Vol. III] Haydn in England, 1791-1795 (1976), pp. 377-8).

Joseph HaydnJoseph Haydn, born March 31, 1732, was an Austrian composer. Haydn had involvement in the development of chamber music and is sometimes known as the “Father of the Symphony” and “Father of the String Quartet.”

Haydn was a court musician for a good portion of his career, which largely isolated him from other composers and music trends.

A celebrated European composer, Haydn was friend and mentor to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and teacher to Ludwig von Beethoven. Haydn passed away May 31, 1809.
